Housing Guide

Starting a new chapter in life is always exciting and having chosen Eindhoven as your study destination you can look forward to settling in the Netherlands. The next major step, will be to find yourself somewhere to live.

Laid out in a step-by-step manner, the DAE Housing Guide builds upon the experience and feedback of staff, students, and alumni of Design Academy Eindhoven with the aim of streamlining the process of house hunting. Finding a home can be a challenging and lengthy experience, and in response this guide aims to explain the key considerations, terminology, and structures that impact students when they begin renting in Eindhoven.

THE DUTCH HOUSING CRISIS

At present, there is a housing shortage within the Dutch market, and this affects our international student body most of all. This especially true as the housing market in the Netherlands can be very different to the same in your home country.

The city of Eindhoven is home to a number of other universities and one of the largest companies in the Netherlands (ASML). In normal conditions, finding housing in the city is a competition against other students and expats, however at present this is exacerbated by the national housing crisis that has been ongoing the Netherlands over the past years.

It can take some weeks to accustom yourself to the platforms and procedures that will be fundamental to being accepted as a tenant, the guide below is designed to help you navigate this early stage by making your search as clear and as simple as possible. During your search, you can also always reach out to the DAE Housing Officer Ned Kaar at housing@designacademy.nl if you have any questions or queries.

The task of finding housing is one that requires some work. Beginning to search early, and rent early, is strongly recommended. In September, as the academic year begins, finding housing is extremely difficult. It is advised that you begin your search in April or May, and to plan to move to Eindhoven months before the beginning of the academic year.

HOUSING SUPPORT AT DAE

Please note that the Design Academy does not provide housing for students, and the responsibility for finding housing lies with each individual student. It has been the case in the past that students have failed to find accommodation before they start which can cause serious difficulties in settling into the Netherlands and result in students not being able to finish their studies here.

For current students, the Housing Officer provides advice and guidance in resolving housing issues and can be consulted via email. To visit Ned in person on the 2nd floor, please mail ahead to housing@designacademy.nl to make an appointment (Tuesdays or Thursdays).
