Research Department

How can design contribute to today's societies and to our collective and individual futures? Research plays a large role in understanding where we might begin to approach the complexities within this seemingly simple question. We also need research to help us determine and communicate the value of design and the role of education.

At DAE, research is a field that maneuvers between the extremes of theory and practice. Through design research, we aim to find new approaches to engaging with and understanding more about society, design and education.

Our focus is on the future – a concept that contains many layers of questions and complexities. This requires more diversity of knowledge and insight than we can contain within our department, so we work with a wide range of partners and collaborators from various fields, industries and forms of practice.

At DAE, research takes place at different levels. It is embedded in the curriculum of our bachelor and master programmes, as well as having a dedicated department. Alumni and external partners are also involved in the research process during projects and collaborations.

This all comes together within the professorships, where research is the core focus. Professorships are 'research groups' that conduct research within a research area under the leadership of a professor.

CURRENT PROFESSORSHIPS

Each professorship specialises in one or more research areas. Within a professorship, research is done in different ways: studying, sharing knowledge and collaborating.

RESEARCH INNOVATION AND ADVANCEMENT (RIA)

At DAE, we carry out research by approaching society from different perspectives. This is only possible by connecting to other points of view beyond the walls of the Academy. By collaborating with different disciplines, partners and researchers, team RIA finds new insights and broaden DAE's field of research and reference. These collaborations take place at regional, national and international level.

Team RIA is a part of the staff within DAE that deals with concrete matters such as support in setting up research and internationalisation and partner projects, and finding financial coverage for those projects through grants and partner agreements.

Please contact the team if you are interested in collaborating at research@designacademy.nl.

From the earliest days of practice-oriented research and research groups in higher education, DAE has subscribed to this approach. The first research group (Eco Design with Dr Ursula Tischner) was launched in 2002. In the years since, DAE has established a number of different research groups in various forms, ranging from the addition of a research chair in a design department to the participation in a multi-year consortium programmes.
