Inside the Surface

Azusa Matsukubo

A collection of damaged screens encourages appreciating the complex materiality that makes digital content consumption possible.

The social and environmental impact of the material carriers of our media consumption often goes unnoticed. With screens becoming increasingly thinner and more seamless, our attention is directed solely toward the displayed content. Inside the Surface seeks to bridge the cognitive gap between the complex materiality of screens and our oblivious consumption of media. Through the disassembly or damage of screens, their intricate composition of light, signals, colours, minerals, compounds, and various technologies is revealed. By highlighting the interplay of these materials and technologies, this project aims to foster a deeper appreciation of the infrastructure behind the digital images we encounter on a daily basis.
