Buoy 303
Created as a homage to the dilapidated buoys in the harbour of Hong Kong, ‘Buoy 303’ explores the beauty of ageing in nautical infrastructure. Arthur Hainz crafted a sculptural furniture piece that references the forms of propellers, buoys, and other hard-working items found in maritime settings that often go underappreciated. Paying respect to the rust and corrosion that comes with years of service, the designer applied different treatments to the metal surface of the object to mimic the effects of saltwater over time. When sat on, the furniture gently rocks to capture the motion of waves, allowing for contemplation on the vital role that such items play out at sea over their lifetimes.
