Local Shit

Antonia Schreiber

Local shit is a response to two pressing environmental issues: the current nitrogen crisis in the Netherlands which is largely caused by the country’s livestock industry, and the cement industry’s emissions of greenhouse gases. The project proposes a sustainable plaster material that combines surplus cow manure, locally dug clay and sand, which is waterproof, weather resistant and thus suitable for architectural applications in wet climates. The material research and feasibility study challenges the current approach to architecture in urban contexts by offering a viable alternative to concrete. The outcome is a showcase of the material’s performance on a large scale which offers insight into three possible flows of production.
