The Infinite Resource
Anna Oberthaler
Private companies have identified DNA as a valuable resource for the creation of new and often highly profitable products; powerful pharmaceuticals and chemicals. Marine species are exploited for their rare genetic material. Universities and companies are patenting the highly valuable gene sequences of these marine species. The search for new genes is extremely expensive, resulting in a few main players becoming the ‘owners’ of what should be shared by the entire world.
The Infinite Resource video installation sheds light on this practice, revealing the tension between ecological protection and political and economic exploitation.
