“Sulphur is essential to sustain all forms of life on Earth”
What: A series of machine-made sculptures of pure sulphur, shaped and solidified by flowing water. The sculptures show the passing of time, through the acceleration of a naturally slow process.
Why: Historically sulphur is closely linked to concepts of hell and alchemy, because of its flammable and odorous features. Paradoxically, sulphur is an essential for all life. The project looks into the the cultural, environmental and historical aspects of the element that is important for the world's economy.
How: The sculptures show sulphur in its, rarely seen, pure form. A two metre ‘triptych’ made by using traditional inlay and engraving techniques, exhibits the myths as well as the industrial and geological cycles of this rather underestimated material.
