The Rare Metal Age
Anna Diljá Sigurđardóttir
“We are at risk of ignoring the dangers of relying too much on too little”
What: A film exploring the environmental, economic and geopolitical consequences of a society relying on rare metals and looking to a possible new source: Polymetallic Nodules in the deep sea.
Why: Metals are now essential for nearly all our electronic, military, and ‘green’ technologies. Given the continuous depletion of land deposits of minerals, mining companies are turning to the oceans. However, these fragile habitats are located in areas beyond national jurisdiction, meaning they belong to everyone – or to no one.
How: The project investigates the challenges and complexities that lie ahead and allows us a closer look into the natural elements that shape a significant share of our material world.
