Vera van de Seyp

Vera van de Seyp is a computational designer, artist and educator in the Netherlands and the US. She explores new parts of technology where boundaries are still blurry and yet to be defined and finds systems in chaos. This manifests in artifacts such as generative design tools, printed matter, tactile knitted graphics, computational typography, websites, and multimedia installations. She pushes the boundaries of both the medium she works in and her own expertise. Code is her primary material, with which she creates custom design tools. In this process, she combines generative systems with principles of craftsmanship.

Vera has collaborated with clients like WIRED Magazine, Serpentine Galleries London, and Google Arts and Culture. She recently completed a Research Assistantship with the Future Sketches group at MIT Media Lab and is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI). Beyond her own practice, Vera is dedicated to sharing knowledge: she teaches, hosts workshops, lectures, and mentorship. Her hope is to encourage the next generation of makers to embed a generative approach in their practice. She also organizes the yearly creative coding symposium ITERATIONS. About the Lecture

In her talk, Vera van de Seyp will present her work alongside a selection of projects, highlighting the value of embracing mistakes as an integral part of the creative process. By showcasing curated work that spans a diverse range of media and scales, she will explain how errors and setbacks have helped lead to unexpected discoveries, reconsidering goals, and a deeper understanding of the matter at hand. Through this discussion guided by case studies, Vera hopes to challenge notions of good/bad work and encourage a more experimental, process-driven approach to design and artistic practice.
