Colour and Light
Angélique Ratkina
Material research into glass sought to recreate the unpredictable combinations of lights and colour that unfold at dawn and dusk.
At dawn or dusk, a captivating sight unfolds— the sky explodes with shades of reds, oranges and pinks as the sun grazes the horizon. Every day this spectacle of light and colour appears, but it is never the same. Angelique Ratkina wants to recreate the feeling of wonder these unpredictable combinations of colours evoke. She discovered that fusing panes of glass with a variety of white pigments can produce intriguing colour gradients and textures. Bubbles form when glass fuses, creating a texture that refracts light in unique ways. The pigments react to heat. Some turn greenish-yellow, while others turn a muted mix of peachy orange and coral pink. Like the unpredictable sunset, Angelique never knows what to expect when she opens the kiln.
