Samurai Spirit

Amy Lewis

Seen through the eyes of the Samurai, windows become an emblem of Japanese culture. Their purpose is not merely for lighting or ventilation but also for creating a picture frame that cuts out a unique piece of the view. During times of scarcity, the Samurai armour was crafted with repurposed metals from farming tools and kitchen utensils. Amy Lewis applied the Samurai spirit to the making of three window hangings from pre-consumer waste, celebrating the beauty of their armour in a modern-day context. For the Samurai, beauty is achieved through careful and thoughtful assemblage. With a batch of discarded blinds and 20 kilos of unused shoelaces and ribbons, practicality and aesthetics are combined.
