“You can save the reef by casting a coral house”
What: A rescue operation for the almost destroyed coral reefs of Curacao, offering beach-goers the chance to make a sustainable, low-cost and fun contribution.
Why: In 2010 Curacao was hit by hurricane Tomas, destroying 50 per cent of the island’s coral reefs. As almost everything that it could thrive on was washed away, the coral is in desperate need of help. ‘Kas’i koral’, invites tourists and locals to cast a plaster donut on the beach as a fertile growing ground for baby corals.
How: This simple do-it-yourself kit is available at the marine biology centre on the beach. Prepare the plaster with seawater, pour your donut and sink it in the sea ten minutes later. It will attract the fish to instigate the growth of algae that coral polyps feed on.
