BA students create bespoke workstations with Leeuwerik

DAE students have designed and created their own workstations from a single sheet of plywood, in a collaboration between Studio Thinking Hands and sheet material specialists Leeuwerik.

In February 2022, 25 students from the DAE BA studio led by Kiki van Eijk and Joost Bleijswijk joined a two-day workshop to design and make their own workstations.

Each student received one 18mm sheet of plywood as a base material, with all of the sheet material contributed by Leeuwerik Plaat b.v. Leeuwirk is an importer and wholesaler of a wide variety of sheet materials, with bases in Eindhoven, Hoevelaken and Drachten.

Students tailored their designs to their needs, with access to additional materials in the DAE workshops, such as metal and plastic, as well as roller wheels, tools and lighting that they could attach to their workstations.

Studio Thinking Hands takes a hands-on approach to design, starting with material investigations – the qualities and limitations of a material give rise to failures and unexpected discoveries. “When they sink their teeth into a material, students are guided, as it were, through a process that unfolds ‘naturally’ before them,” explained the studio heads.

‘Studio Thinking Hands challenges students to experiment with various materials in an investigative way. The contribution from Leeuwerik gives our students an opportunity to perform this research with high-quality material,’ added van Eijk and Bleijswijk.
