Studio Body Building x Shoe Quarter
From September 2023 to February 2024, 18 second year students from the bachelor studio Body Building worked with the Shoe Quarter and its volunteers of the Shoe Lab to create and make their own shoe concepts.
During the lessons at DAE, designer Suzanne Oude Hengel guided the students on a weekly basis with their concept.
In five workshop sessions at the museum, spread over four months, the students learned all about making shoes, how to work with the materials and the machines (see Youtube). The assignment was quite challenging, since none of the students had ever worked with leather, let along to have made a shoe themselves from scratch. Nevertheless, the students did their best, as the reward for their effort was that five shoe concepts would be selected for the core collection of the Shoe Quarter, and all the shoes would be exhibited at the Shoe Quarter.
Podium Shoe Lab Edition 2023
From 1 February until 1 April, the work of the students were on display at the Shoe Quarter. Curator Marijke Bruggink on the Shoe Lab: "We can be really proud of this Shoe Quarter in Waalwijk, the Netherlands. A museum and knowledge centre in this set-up in the field of shoes does not exist in the whole world. We have a wonderful collection in a fantastic building, as well as the Shoe Lab where schools, designers, industry and visitors meet."
