Lecture
Thursday 17 November 2022

Lukas Wegwerth & Moritz Maria Karl

Roots of Chaos
Roots that grow towards the sound of running water. Leaves that can see the world around them and hollow trees that digest their own body.

Lukas and Moritz, BA studio leaders of the new Studio Silva Systems at DAE, will speak about their own roots and what has brought them together to learn from and with the forest. The lecture will present their work and explore the forest as a superorganism for systemic rethinking, reinterpretation and place for observing and listening.

About the speakers

Lukas Wegwerth
Lukas works on the intersection of crafted objects and engineered modular structures. The studio provides a platform for collaborative building and for multiple contexts such as exhibition design, academic research, public spaces, and private interior —from furniture to architectural-scale structures. Before having graduated with a diploma in Product- and Process Design from the University of the Arts of Berlin, Lukas was trained as a carpenter. Craft and the practical application of his explorations as well as his interest in natural processes and traditional material systems shape his practice as a designer. A sound interest in establishing a regenerative material cycle led Lukas to the foundation of a second branch of the studio outfitted with a wood workshop and sawmill, located in sylvan Germany. Lukas works have been shown in Non-Extractive Architecture at V-A-C Foundation, State of the Art of Architecture at Triennale di Milano, Biodesign Lab at HfG Karlsruhe, for various projects within Atelier LUMA and the LUMA Foundation, Istanbul Design Biennial.

Moritz Maria Karl
Moritz is the founder of OFFICE MMK and currently a guest professor and head of the Chair for Sustainable Urbanism at TU Berlin. The work explores alternative futures arising through complex environmental issues and applies architectural thinking to domains beyond. The work has been awarded in urban design competitions and exhibited in various institutions around Europe. Moritz is trained as an architect and urban designer at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, London and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, KIT, Germany.
