The eyes tell you the truth

Zuika Owada

Marine biologists can delineate the migration paths of tuna by analysing the fish's eyes. Like trees, fish eyes grow in rings, each layer storing information about changes in their diet and environment. The eyes not only tell the tuna’s life story, but expose the lies of the fishing industry. Through lack of transparency, the industry continues to illegally over-fish while breeding political corruption, piracy and even modern slavery. With help from a journalist and a marine scientist, Zuika Owada created an animation that raises questions about the many human rights abuses in the tuna industry, shown through the eyes of a tuna. She also created brooches made from hardened tuna eyes to be used as a protest symbol.
