Graduation project
Life Institutionalised
Zofia Nowakowska
"The project is a study of society through the lens of architecture."
WHAT
A study of characteristic building typologies, researching how architecture could reflect the mindset of modern society.
WHY
Architecture can say a lot about the existential issues that mankind has been dealing with throughout history. By analysing and reimagining three conventional institutions, Zofia Nowakowska adds a new layer to their story, showing how the passing of time can be incorporated in static buildings.
WHY
The sketches of a prison, hospital and columbarium explore today’s themes and timelines. A see-through skyscraper has 52 floors for 52 prisoners, who descend one level each week until their year of incarceration has passed. The hospital has 25 glass pavilions to facilitate a division between different age-groups. And the columbarium with unconventional funerary urns presents the lottery of life and death.
