Inhabited Rain

Yichen Shen

Due to climate change, cities have to increasingly cope with extreme rainfall. All too often, the drainage systems can’t process all the water. However, people don’t seem to worry too much as they rely on modern technology for water management. Yichen Shen developed a scenario in which rainwater from the roof becomes a supply for domestic use. She designed a series of objects to transport and retain rainwater in the living space. The modular system performs differently depending on the intensity and duration of the rain. Integrated houseplants function as indicators for long term changes in rainfall. Thus, in a balance between fear, pleasure and practical use, people may cultivate a new relationship with the rain.
