Prometheus Garden
"Prometheus Garden critically examines the phenomenon of megafires in Greece through an interdisciplinary exploration of the relationship between landscape and fire in Northern Euboea. This project draws on interviews with various local stakeholders, analysis of historical fire incidence data, and study of land use patterns. It investigates how cultural narratives and scientific knowledge shape the understanding of fire across five historical phases: fossilised forests revealing ancient fire-adapted ecosystems, human-fire interconnection through transformative rituals, agricultural advancements altering flora, the Industrial Revolution’s combustion shift, and contemporary megafires exacerbated by global warming.
Featuring moving images, coloured lenses made from pine resin and charcoal, and candle clocks, the multimedia installation evokes the spectral echoes of these processes. Prometheus Garden advocates for comprehensive land stewardship and informed perspectives, aiming to dispel common misconceptions and the fascination with catastrophic fire aesthetics, particularly with emerging terms like megafires."
