Discarded products
Look closely at these imposing sculptures made of an intriguing stone-like material. Soon letters, even full sentences, start to appear on their straight sides and contrasting flowing edges. Through experimentation with discarded thrift store books, Willem Zwiers explores the transformative potential of discarded materials. He sliced the books into parts, bent the pages and hardened the material using a water and wood glue mix. The resulting flowing lines of and variety of colour due to the combination of new and aged paper creates a texture resembling marble. Willem designed these pieces by considering the unique properties of the material while preserving its original characteristics, granting it new life that showcases its journey of transformation.
