United Negotiation of Otherness

Vivien Tauchmann

"Empathy is an active state of mind through which we can connect with others."

WHAT The necessity of educating our bodies through choreographed storylines that provoke behavioural change. WHY With the rise of xenophobia and polarisation, subtle sense-oriented interventions can be a powerful tool for challenging our preconceptions about others. HOW In the educational programme of the ‘United Negotiation of Otherness’, Vivien Tauchmann emphasises the importance of body language, gestures and movement in turning away from visually learned stereotypes and focusing on embodied experiences rather than on media imagery. She turns the designer and participants into both material and research tool, helping us understand how we feel about other people and what their experiences may be.
