A Weaving Tapestry

Valentin Bauberger

# “I aim to balance all aspects of my work, being conscious of what I’m giving up, or gaining, with each technology or technique.”

Weaving is a craft of supreme simplicity yet intense labour. No surprise that it was amongst the first professions to be industrialised and computerised. Applying his design worldview to the textile medium for the first time, Valentin Bauberger selected tools and techniques that leave space for the most creative human qualities, while avoiding others that limit freedom and complexity. Like geological layers, ‘A Weaving Tapestry’ transitions from simple but laborious manual shapes at its base, to more technology-reliant patterns at the top. Hand-woven entirely in organic cotton and linen on a computer-aided loom, the tapestry is based on, and surrounded by, a vast library of samples created during the research period from February to August 2020.
