Time and the character of things - objects

Inspired by old and second-hand items whose journey is written on their surfaces, this project explores our affinity with ‘personal’ qualities. Dents, scratches and corrosion occur through usage and show their journey and past, conveying a sense of time and making them truly rich. Conventional industrially produced objects are not valued and are often quickly replaced. Tom Schoonhoven wishes to surround himself with domestic items that embody characteristics of crafts. Using his own tools, skills and knowledge, he is making a growing collection for daily use, born to be cared for and looked after. By creating greater value and personal connection between object and user, he ensures them a long life in the care of successive owners.
