VTBF Furniture - A veneer topped bio-foam composite

Thomas Norman

The majority of recyclable waste is not being recycled. This is especially the case for modern domestic furniture. Low build quality, materials that are difficult to separate and changing trends result in home furnishings heading for the landfill only a few years after purchase. If our products do not need to last, then they should be designed to decay. ‘VTBF’ uses existing technologies to create strong and lightweight forms for furniture design. High density bio-foam gives volume and stability to a hard outer edge natural wood veneer, but will degrade quickly. This combination offers many affordable interior applications to be produced at scale as it is a moulded process. ‘VTBF’ invites designers and manufacturers to take a circular approach to furniture design.
