The minimalist architect's cell (Ratio for an architecture of "Simple Living")
Theo Galliakis
Based on a visit to the monasteries of Mount Athos, an architectural installation explores the hidden footprint of ‘simple living’.
Minimalism has surged in popularity, trending after a decade-long economic recession. Celebrities and star architects have embraced it as a way of living and designing that lead to a happier life. Theo Galliakis tells the story of an architect seeking to discover the secret of ‘simple’ and minimal living. Following in the footsteps of predecessors like Le Corbusier into the monasteries of Mount Athos, he soon realizes that fulfilling this ideal requires more than the 6 sqm of a monastic cell commonly referenced in minimalist and monastic architecture. Within a 1:1 scale model of a monastic cell, the installation reveals a landscape of models, implementing the ratio for an architecture of ‘simple living,’ touching on issues of materiality, affordability, and inaccessibility.
