The Butcher
Tanguy Pitavy
Humans play animals actors playing humans in a series of miniature sets, a play and ongoing rehearsals that explore the political impact of fiction.
The Butcher is a performative investigation exploring fiction, not as the creation of a new reality, but as a process reshaping our interpretations. The project follows the making of a theatrical play performed on a miniature stage by animal-actors with human personalities. The animal-actors engage in political debates and explore strategies of resistance and rebellion, that, because they are animals not humans, subvert traditional notions of power and representation. In addition to the script and the miniature stages, Tanguy Pitavy has led groups of people in rehearsing the play. The rehearsals lead to debate about the issues raised in the script, stretching the fictional realm beyond what is on stage or paper.
