Flux Rug

Tamara Van Roij

This rug mimics a digital device: it is as entertaining, colourful and addictive as the screen of your laptop, iPad or phone. And yet there is nothing digital to it. Tamara van Roij has managed to capture the dynamics of screen technology in a textile rug. Three embroidered layers of viscose yarns – yellow, magenta and cyan – play with perception. By choosing a different direction for each layer, the rug gets a new look when viewed from a different angle, and also when the light changes. Colours shift, brighten and blend as you come closer. Flux shows how ‘old-fashioned’ furniture can fit in with this digital era; perhaps it can even save us from our screen addiction?
