The Rooms
In the journey of our lives, we encounter various forms of ‘rooms’. These can be physical spaces in which we dwell, but also psychological and emotional spaces we create to find a sense of solace. Sungkyung chose to interrogate the idea of a room through a series of miniature paper models, including her grandparents’ home in Korea after they had moved away, and her own living space in Eindhoven. The designer also considers how people can carve out their own ‘room’ in public space, either by occupying the same bench each day, or by using rain as an excuse to hide from the world under an umbrella. When examining the tiny versions of these rooms, an accompanying audio guide helps visitors contemplate how space is integral to the identity of those who occupy it.
