Almer

Sterre ter Beek

Alzheimer breaks down brain cells and neural connections, leading to a literal loss of mind. ‘Almer’, an alteration of the word Alzheimer, helps to recover valuable memories by stimulating the senses. During her daily coffee break with her grandfather, Sterre ter Beek discovered that a familiar sound, scent, taste or feeling can bring back recollections and abilities that seemed to be gone. As a tribute to a lifetime of cherished moments, she designed a highly sensorial ritual. This personalised coffee set carries the colour of her grandfather’s hometown, the Morse code structure of his naval days, and the familiar spoon clink sounds of long ago. ‘Almer’ reveals the presence of the past through an intimate and tactile experience.
