Helter Shelter: Connected Dwelling Prototypes

Sophie Conroy

A patchworked nest and a series of books document how the designer met her needs while living without a fixed home for six months.

The idea that we need a fixed place to call 'home' is one of our most fundamental certainties. Sophie Conroy questions if our experience of home can be fluid. She chose to be houseless in Eindhoven for a period of six months, meeting her needs of shelter through building temporary homes, or nests. During that time, she explored alternative ways of living that depend on a strong connection to community, nature and herself. Thorough self-observation and documentation led her to reevaluate social and personal structures. The result is a patchwork of nests and a series of books. They show the insights and tools she used to meet her needs while dealing with the chaos of uncertainty.
