Permutation

Sophie Bohlmann

An interactive installation shows how even the smallest facial expressions can influence the behaviour of other people.

This installation showcases how even the smallest smile or frown can influence other people’s behaviour. ‘Permutation’ allows you to interact with a digital animation representing a child in all its emotional states. After extensive research and with the help of facial tracking company Noldus and a psychologist, Sophie Bohlmann designed and coded software that translates facial expressions into an action-reaction sequence with an on-screen character. Using an additive system, each ‘player’ will create another child, depending on their emotional output; with a near-infinite tree of possibilities. The installation is meant as an awareness tool that helps us understand our emotions and how they affect children or any other person opposite you.
