Graduation project
Grace of Glaze
Simone Doesburg
"I’ve let the colours define the character of the design."
WHAT
A porcelain colour grid and series of tableware exploring how tinted clay and semi-transparent glazes work together to create different hues.
WHY
Choosing the colour tends to be one of the last steps in design. The shape and function have been defined, and the colour is added as a layer on top. Why not consider the colour in an earlier phase?
HOW
The semi-transparent glaze allows the original clay to show through towards the rim, whereas the shape of the products encourages the glaze to pool towards the bottom, becoming more intense in colour along the way. The resulting gradient shows all the shades in between. With three colours of clay and 25 glazes, Simone Doesburg explores 75 variations. The possibilities are endless.
