Stapel
Every year between 3,000 and 4,000 trees are felled for various reasons in Amsterdam. Most of the logs are either chipped and burned as biomass or transported abroad to be turned into timber. The municipality would prefer to process and use this valuable resource locally and avoid part of its timber import. However, one main challenge for local processing lies in the drying and storage. Sawn planks need to dry before they can be used. Kiln drying is fast but requires a lot of energy. Air drying takes months and requires space. Silver van Sprundel proposes to dry the wood in carefully built stacks in public locations around the city to make inhabitants part of the process.
