Couture Objects
Sien Entius
A series of objects explore the similarities between furniture and clothing making by applying pattern designs made for objects onto the body.
Originally trained as a furniture maker, Sien Entius used her knowledge of that craft to construct shapes in textiles. Her experiments focused on using objects to inspire pattern design and placing the results on her body to analyse their relationship. In the process, she discovered more similarities between making furniture and making garments. Both concern shapes built up of surfaces. Couture means fashion created to the specific requests and measurements of a customer, and furniture is custom-made and has specific size requirements determined by usage and the body. From this analogy between couture and carpentry, fashion and interior, Sien developed a series of objects that exist between furniture and clothing.
