The Pact of Forgetting
The Pact of Forgetting’ is a Spanish amnesty law approved after the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, which prevents legal investigation into the crimes committed during his 40-year rule. This institutionalised concept of collective amnesia still affects society today, leaving an incomplete national narrative. Sergi Casero Nieto’s ’The Pact of Forgetting’ performance builds on Spain’s historical silence and its effects on those born after the dictatorship. Immaterial elements such as light and sound, evoke the memories of the main characters, including the designer’s grandmother who lived through the Civil War and Franco regime. Through this work, the designer advocates for the value of collecting different perspectives, beyond the ‘official’ versions of history.
