## “Have we gone too far in the realities shaped by social media trends?”
In his book, ‘De Perfecte Kapsalon’, Sebas Reneman traces the evolution of a cult Dutch fast-food classic. With its signature mix of fries, grilled meat, melted cheese, salad and sauce, the kapsalon originated in a Rotterdam snack bar around 2003. It remained a local phenomenon until the rise of social medial made it a hit across the country. Mirroring fashionable food trends on sites such as YouTube and Instagram, the dish developed further. Vegan versions emerged, as did increasingly photogenic creations, complete with sprinklings of fresh flowers. Yet these are far removed from the humble origins of this hearty belly-filler. Since when is ‘ordinary’ no longer good enough?
