The Social Classroom
Sakshi Jain
A manifesto encouraging Indian girls to embrace their own identity, presented as an audiovisual installation of school uniforms and hierarchy.
Step into 'The Social Classroom', an audiovisual installation. Here, you'll explore the concept of governmentality—the performance of power in contemporary society and the impact of forced conformity. At an Indian boarding school, Sakshi Jain had to follow extreme rules including strict uniform requirements down to the colour of her undergarments. Contrasting uniforms were used to visually separate the 'ideal’ head students. By redesigning uniforms, she created personas that represent the school's hierarchy. They’re visualized in each chapter, such as the ‘teacher dominatrix’, in the manifesto ‘Hack your school’. It shows Indian girls how to overcome their hurdles and reclaim their stolen identities. The manifesto invites them to challenge the status quo and embrace authenticity, with a hint of irony.
