Fragile Carriers
Rabia Sulhan
Five fragile-looking columns symbolise the lack of accountability for the Turkish government’s failure to protect its citizens from natural disasters.
Fragile Carrier explores the relationship between politics and citizens’ vulnerability to earthquakes in Turkey. Five columns, made from non-durable materials discovered within the remnants of buildings that collapsed during the recent earthquake in Turkey, serve as symbolic representations of the fragile government system entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding its citizens. By visually linking the state (the ceiling) and citizens (the floor), the installation highlights the need for government accountability in disaster preparedness. Motivated by Rabia Sulhan’s traumatic earthquake experience, the project delves into Turkey’s social, economic, scientific, political, religious, and historical aspects to understand the government's inaction. It calls for urgent measures like involving experts, strengthening inspections, imposing penalties, retrofitting buildings, raising public awareness, and seeking truth despite media censorship.
