A metal shelving unit optimises material use thanks to its one-piece flatpack design and easy-to-mount structure.
H.B.M.S. (Hand-Bent Metal Shelf) is a one-piece flatpack furniture design. The industrial-format metal sheet measures 2.5 x 1.25 metres and features a laser-cut drawing. All parts of the shelf are drawn on the sheet. You fold each individual piece into position by hand to form a rigid structure. Once folded, the matrix becomes a shelving unit. The challenge of the project lies in utilising a 1.5-mm-thick sheet of stainless steel and a method of industrial transformation. The question it addresses is: how can we optimise the use of the material? H.B.M.S. strikes a balance between sculptural appearance and the strength of its industrial dynamics, with the intention of making the design drawing visible in the product.
