Unda

Pien ten Napel

## “Unda being the Latin word for water ripple, my hope is that this project as a stone in the water will raise people’s awareness of their energy consumption.”

Pien ten Napel’s childhood interest in chemical reactions returned when she started to explore the issues of renewable energy that in the foreseeable future has to replace fossil fuels. After all kinds of experiments, she ended up conceiving Unda, a tool to harvest your own energy from magnesium and graphite in salted water. Magnesium can be extracted from sea water and dissolves again in it as part of the electrolyte reaction with graphite. Apart from a visually attractive energy source, the Unda installation represents a circular process that can eventually be scaled up.
