AMBARA

Paulien Nabben

## “Rwanda has vast resources for local, responsible plant-based textile production.”

Rwanda is successfully stimulating local design and production of clothes. These clothes are often made with imported synthetic textiles and raw cotton, although we think many opportunities lie in the usage of the local resources. ‘AMBARA’ is a plant-based textile lab collaborative with ‘Iriza Ntako Heritage LTD’ and ‘Kigali Modern’- Rwandan experts who have come together to develop production methods for local available alternatives to imported textile, focusing on developing local economies, and safeguarding the country’s ecological well-being. The lab investigates the use of fibres from native plants like bamboo, water hyacinth and banana plants. The end result must be an easily accessible method of local textile production that is both economically and sustainably sound.
