Corps, Core

Paula Gouablin Essou

The cultural monopoly of American media influences the perception of black womanhood as being loud, sassy, mean, bitchy, difficult and aggressive. In an effort to challenge this stereotype, the designer has made a series of short films inspired by her own French Afro heritage, and drawing on the DIY and futuristic qualities of Nollywood and Afrofuturism. The films feature characters with roles and personality traits that mainstream and social media do not consider typical for black women. Instead, the women in Corps, Core are television hosts and storytellers, empowered and carefree, reclaiming black identity and proposing a way to gaze back at contemporary media and design culture.
