Graduation project
The Printed Cricket
Papon Sirimai
“Should we blindly accept every solution hailed as the new food of the future?”
What: Ground insect powder is shaped to resemble the original insect, visualising what this food is made of and forcing people to remain critical.
Why: Edible insects such as crickets are ground up for use in Western products to make them more appealing to eat. In this unrecognisable form, people are more likely to swallow the hype of insects as the ‘food of the future’ when perhaps they shouldn’t, believes Papon Sirimai. Insects are seen as a more sustainable alternative to livestock. Yet, is that really the case?
How: By making insect-based food less abstract, Papon aims to initiate an important conversation about our food system and the way forward.
