Portals Decayed
"Portals Decayed is a sensorial multimedia installation that projects a world where sculptural forms and atmospheric soundscapes blend to echo the contested quality of Nicosia—the last divided capital of Europe. Composed of limestone fragments scavenged from Eindhoven’s construction sites, repurposed wooden ladder pieces, ceramic tiles, and a full-scale aluminium sand-casted gate, these elements together shape a portal; a dreamscape reminiscent of Nicosia’s timeworn ruins, bridging the physical and emotional chasm between the designer abroad and his homeland.
In this ambiguous space, enigmatic creatures emerge, symbolising the possible dwellers of such imagined realms. What began as an experimental archive of materials, as a way to understand these environments and study their aesthetics, evolved into a scenography of space and memory, with 3D scans and field-recordings gathered from the city amplifying an empirical connection to its fractured reality. In these ruins, the designer finds a paradoxical sense of home, where decay and resilience coexist."
