Languages of Learning

Ophelia Ford-Welman

Teaching methods have changed little in the past century. Students are passively talked at, there is a one-size-fits all approach, and the written word rules, believes Ophelia Ford-Welman. With ‘Languages of Learning’, she explores how to accommodate different learning needs and be more interactive. Her approach combines movement, visuals and storytelling, and is designed to inspire. In her textbook she incorporates strong visual elements, drawing parallels across pages. The binding is loose, so students can group topics together in a way that’s logical to them. And why not use the physical space as well? As in a gym, coloured lines on classroom walls and floor define an active area and can illustrate everything from historical periods to geometry.
