Causa Materialis
Materials are constantly being reframed, recategorized and repurposed. Causa Materialis is the result of a design methodology developed through the categorisation of materials in the designer’s lived environment. The library represents a taxonomy of design, separating materials used in the fields of architecture and product design across its levels. The bed, desk and light are each based on a group of materials found throughout this library—plastics, metals and glass respectively—and express new aesthetics and functions based on how these materials appear. Through their complexity, these objects invite us to look closer at the materials in our environments and the functions they perform.
