Preservation of Decay
Monuments that are marked by the signs of time are carefully preserved, expressing our need to freeze moments in time. ‘Preservation of Decay’, however, embraces the ongoing process of transformation. Vulnerable to the elements, these gravestones monumentalise the body and reflect what happens underneath the earth. Instead of using solid marble or granite, Micky Yael Nooitgedagt opted for limestone, which is sensitive to erosion. Allowing wind, rain and sun to deepen the sculptured patterns, each stone erodes in its own unique way. As decades pass, a dynamic personal landscape emerges in honour of those we loved. It evolves in sync with nature and in the end goes back to dust.
