Magical Nature of Diasporic Spaces
How do Turkish businesses such as barber shops, bakeries and döner shops inhabit buildings in Dutch neighbourhoods? Metincan Güzel did psychogeographic research of the Turkish districts of four cities in The Netherlands. He observed that the uniquely diasporic spatial architecture of these shops is constantly morphing between imaginary polarities of home and away, exterior and interior, transparency and opacity, and past and present. A queering methodology was used to develop three storefront facades that challenge the audience’s navigation and bodily experiences through unconventional, disorienting configurations and scales. These thresholds are presented as invitations to daydream.
