Rooms / My Room
Matan Bellemakers
The objects that prison inmates keep in their cells reveal each prisoner’s unique identity in an environment that treats them as one and the same. Knowing the inmates need to stay unrecognizable, Matan Bellemakers shows their personalities and tells their individual stories by exhibiting their material possessions. As one of the inmates says: “You have to be careful that you do not lose your identity in here because here you are a number. This is my way of keeping my identity. It’s a daily reminder of who I am, what I am and what I stand for.”
