The Tournament of Doubt
Martynas Gailiušas
The collapse of the Soviet Union in Lithuania and the overnight implementation of free-market capitalism is marked by a complex process of decolonization and (re)construction of identities. The process is characterised by a friction between an unwanted past and a desired future, and the assumption that it is achievable by ‘catching up’ with The West. The Tournament of Doubt investigates how the winners, losers, and ever changing rules of the colonial game of catch-up, is a construction. Using the language of sport emphasises how the ruthless can be designed to appear innocent and fair.
